Definition
A dense, non-destructive clonal proliferation of small mature T-lymphocytes confined to the gastrointestinal tract mucosa with or without extension into the submucosa, not associated with significant epitheliotropism. It usually affects the small intestine or colon; however, it can affect any site in the gastrointestinal tract. It usually presents with chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and weight loss. The clinical course is characterized by persistent disease or recurrences. Patients do not respond to conventional chemotherapy, but conservative management (e.g., steroid therapy) prolongs survival. It can progress and spread to extranodal sites or transform into aggressive lymphoma.
