Definition
A well-differentiated and slow-growing subtype of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma that often arises in the setting of chronic injury or esophagitis. It usually affects the lower third of the esophagus and often grows as a cauliflower-like exophytic intraluminal mass. It usually displays surface papillary projections, minimal cytological atypia, and minimal mitotic activity. Keratin collections are present at the base of the papillary structures. The invasive component is characterized by broad bulbous pushing projections. Metastases are uncommon.
