Definition
Systemic mastocytosis that involves the digestive system. It affects any part of the gastrointestinal tract, less often the liver, and rarely the pancreaticobiliary system. Symptoms include diffuse abdominal pain and cramping, diarrhea, and constipation. Most patients have indolent systemic mastocytosis. Advanced systemic mastocytosis manifests with progressive weight loss, hypoalbuminemia, hepatosplenomegaly, ascites, elevated liver function tests, rapidly increasing serum tryptase levels, and lymphadenopathy.
