Inclusion Criteria: * rectal cancer of TNM stage I-III * underwent radical resection with curative intent Exclusion Criteria: * synchronous colon cancer * synchronous gastrointestinal cancer * underwent palliative resection * presented with intestinal obstruction * those lost to follow-up.
