DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS: * Diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia * No promyelocytic leukemia * No prior therapy PATIENT CHARACTERISTICS: * Hemoglobin \> 10 g/dL PRIOR CONCURRENT THERAPY: * See Disease Characteristics
